Ingredients

  • 1 lb ziti or penne
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce, or 3 cups homemade
  • 1 container (15 oz) ricotta
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, divided
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella, divided
  • 1/4 cup chopped basil

Steps

  1. Step 1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Boil the ziti 2 minutes short of the package time and drain.

  2. Step 2. Cook the onion in the oil for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sausage and cook for 8 minutes until browned and cooked through with no pink. Add the sauce and simmer 5 minutes.

  3. Step 3. Mix the ricotta, egg, half the Parmesan, and 1 cup of the mozzarella.

  4. Step 4. Toss the pasta with the sauce. Layer half in a 9x13 dish, dot with the ricotta, and add the rest of the pasta. Top with the remaining cheeses.

  5. Step 5. Cover with foil and bake 25 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 minutes until bubbling and hot throughout (165°F). Top with basil.
