Green Bean Casserole

The Thanksgiving classic: green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce under crispy fried onions.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb green beans, trimmed and cut
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Steps

  1. Step 1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Boil the beans for 4 minutes, drain, and cool in ice water.

  2. Step 2. Cook the mushrooms in the butter for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and flour and stir for 1 minute.

  3. Step 3. Whisk in the milk and stock and simmer for 4 minutes until thick. Season with the salt and pepper.

  4. Step 4. Mix with the beans and 2/3 cup of onions in a baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes.

  5. Step 5. Top with the remaining onions and bake 5 to 10 minutes more.
